URGENT MESSAGE
Dear Residents,
This weekend, there was a major blockage in our sewer system. Luther Public Works Authority (LPWA) had to engage the services of a commercial plumbing company from Oklahoma City due to the severity of the clog. This cost the LPWA over $5,500. This clog was caused by grease/fats being dumped in our sewer system. The grease solidified and filled up the sewer main line for several feet, making it impossible for normal sewer waste to flow.
This clog was caused by grease/fats being dumped in our sewer system.
This also caused sewage to back up in a commercial building, causing much grief and expense to the owner.
Like human arteries, the pipes in your house or business and the Town of Luther’s sanitary sewer system will not work if they are clogged. Fortunately, most clogged pipes are 100% preventable. The first step is to prevent fats, oil, grease (FOG) and “flushable wipes” from getting in the pipes to begin with.
We are urging everyone to please be good stewards of our infrastructure. Sewer systems are not designed for grease and fats. Please don’t pour grease and fats down your drains.
Please check your sewer line that runs from your home or business and attaches to the main line. If you do not have a back-flow valve on your property, installing one could prevent sewage from backing up into your home or business. All new construction or replacement lines are required to have a back-flow valve. Consult with a plumber to determine if you have a back-flow valve on your property.
Tips to Avoid Clogged Pipes
Avoid costly sewer backups with these tips provided by OMAG, the town’s insurance provider:
- Never pour cooking grease, butter, or fats down the drain. Dispose of it properly.
- Wipe greasy pots and dishes with paper towels before washing them.
- Cleaning wipes and baby wipes do NOT dissolve, and can clog your plumbing and sewer lines.
- Even “flushable” and “disposable” wipes can cause sewer clogs.
- Be kind to your plumbing – put used wipes and hygiene items in the trash, not the toilet.
