Water Upgrades on Tap

No one likes to be without municipal water service, but it happens. Leaks and breaks plague any system, including the aging underground lines that carry clean water to the faucets of homes and businesses in the Town of Luther. Thanks to grant funding, the town is embarking on an upgrade project to alleviate some of the inconvenience water repairs cause for those 500 customers who rely on the service.

The $99,999 grant award, through the Rural Economic Action Plan (REAP), will fund new water valves on the waterworks system. With the valves, public works staff will be able to isolate sections of water lines for emergency repairs and routine maintenance to minimize disruptions to customers.

“We plan to strategically install the valves in a sequence for the least disruption of service and give advance notice when a valve zone is being installed,” said Town Manager Scherrie Pidcock.

The project is slated to run from March 25 through May 3, 2024. Southern Excavation of Stillwater was the low-bid winner for the installation. The REAP grant provides the bulk of the funding, plus additional funding from the public works capital improvements fund. In 2021, Luther voters approved a sales tax increase for capital projects and operations.

“We plan to strategically install the valves in a sequence that will cause the least disruption of service, and we hope to be able to give advance notice when a valve zone is being installed,” said Town Manager Scherrie Pidcock.
